International wave of reforms against LGBTQ

In Italy, the parenthood of LGBTQ people is withdrawn – retroactively. A major issue in the election campaign, right-wing nationalist Vox in the election campaign, is the issue of withdrawing the transgender law that made it easier to change legal sex. In Great Britain similar laws are being withdrawn and in the US the LGBTQ issue has become political explosives and conservative states have hammered through a record number of trans restrictions.

Common to many countries is that LGBTQ restrictive laws are driven by conservative governments or parties. This can have serious consequences, says the organization RFSL.

– There are studies that when you talk negatively about the rights of LGBTQ people, it creates mental illness, says Levi Karvonen, national communicator.

– But we have also seen that it contributes to more hatred and threats against LGBTQ people.

Parties are inspired by each other

In the United States, the issue of reading stories to children, held by drag artists, has also become politically sensitive. A question that has also received attention in Sweden after the Sweden Democrats tried to stop a fairy tale reading in Kalmar.

– You can clearly see that right-wing nationalist parties are inspired by each other, says Emil Edenborg, gender and political scientist at Stockholm University.

– I think it’s about dipping your toes in the water and trying to stretch the boundaries.

The Sweden Democrats refer to themselves as a social conservative party. SVT Nyheter has contacted SD, who chose not to comment on the issue.
