Three Lebanese soldiers killed by Israeli fire

The Lebanese army said Thursday that three of its soldiers, including an officer, were killed by Israeli fire in southern Lebanon, not far from the Israeli border. “The Israeli enemy targeted members of the Lebanese army in the vicinity of the village of Yater, (in the region of) Bint Jbeil (south), while they were carrying out an operation to evacuate wounded, this which led to the death of three martyrs including an officer,” the army said in a statement.

It had already announced on Sunday the death of three of its soldiers in Israeli fire on one of its vehicles in the south of the country, where the Israeli army is carrying out incursions against pro-Iranian Hezbollah. American Defense Minister Lloyd Austin expressed “deep concern” to his Israeli counterpart on Wednesday about these shots.

“At around 3:40 a.m. (2:40 a.m. Paris time), the Israeli enemy launched an air attack from the occupied Syrian Golan and northern Lebanon that targeted two sites in the Kafar Souseh neighborhood of Damascus and a military site near Homs,” Sana said, citing a military source. The province of Homs borders Lebanon, where Israel is at war against Hezbollah, a movement supported – like Syria – by Iran.

“All the ingredients” are there for a military and humanitarian “storm” in Syria, the UN special envoy warned earlier on Wednesday, expressing alarm at the fallout from hostilities in the Middle East which are already having ” serious consequences” for the country. “The flames of conflict are unleashed in the occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza, and in Lebanon. And the heat is also felt in Syria,” Geir Pedersen told the Security Council. “The escalation is already having a major impact on Syria and Syrian civilians. I want to send a clear warning signal: a regional spillover in Syria is alarming and could become much worse, with serious implications for Syria and security and international peace.
