In 2025, you will have to spend a little more in your wallet to pay for certain essential expenses…
The year 2025 will not necessarily be synonymous with savings for the French. The measures taken in recent months by the government and certain economic players predict several increases in the coming months, which will directly affect the purchasing power of many households. Among the costs that will increase, there are essential expenses such as energy or housing.
The first item concerns the tariff of public electricity networks (Turpe), which finances, among other things, the distribution of electricity in France. As decided by the Energy Regulatory Commission, on February 1, 2025, the Turpe tariff will increase by around 1% for households and very small businesses that benefit from it. This concerns approximately 22 million customers. Another expense on the housing side is that of home insurance. Contributions will increase by 8 to 12%. One in particular will jump, the “Natural Disasters” contribution, increasing from 12 to 20% in certain contracts, according to the consulting firm Facts & Figures.
Concerning everyday expenses, many sectors have decided to review their prices, starting with automobile insurance contracts. Experts predict an increase of between 4 and 6%, which is partly linked to inflation in vehicle repair costs. Motorists will now have to pay on average 672 euros for their car insurance per year, or an additional 38 euros. Furthermore, the price of the registration document will be increased in several regions of the territory from January 1, 2025. In Normandy for example, the price of the tax horse will be 60 euros, or 14 euros more than in 2024. Other more moderate increase this time, that of motorway tolls: prices will increase by 0.95% on average, from February 1 2025.
Banks will also review the prices of their services. According to the Banking Prices Observatory, out of the 14 main services offered by financial institutions, seven will see their prices soar: + 14.9% for bank transfers over the counter at BNP Paribas, + 11.76% for account maintenance fees at La Banque Postale and + 4.76% at CIC. In addition to banking establishments, the Post Office is also banking on price adjustments for 2025. From January 1, 2025, sending a letter, a parcel or buying a stamp will cost significantly more. Overall, the increase is estimated at 6.8%. And it doesn’t stop there…
Households will also have to increase their budget for their mobile plan, particularly if they are customers of SFR, Bouygues Telecom or Free. These three operators will once again undergo an increase, from 22% to 28% in 2025, to use Orange infrastructures, which will have direct repercussions on consumers. Finally, households must prepare to see the price of mutual health insurance increase, between 10 and 15% depending on the services and profiles of the insured according to estimates. Likewise, an increase in prices is expected in July 2025 for medical consultations, whether with a general practitioner, a gynecologist or a pediatrician.
