As part of the law aimed at strengthening access to abortion, an experiment now allows midwives to perform this medical act in a list of 18 establishments.

18 establishments to test a new route

Supporting the right to abortion is one of the concerns of the current government. It is in this context and with the desire to concretely facilitate women’s access to abortion (voluntary termination of pregnancy) regardless of their place of residence or their situation that an experiment is being carried out in 18 hospitals, in Paris as in the rest of France.

In these establishments, the midwives, who were already able to prescribe a medical abortion, will therefore be able to broaden their mission and carry out instrumental abortions themselves. The framework for the experiment was set by the social security financing law for 2021. A decree and an order define the conditions required in terms of the organization of health establishments, training and experience of midwives. to ensure the safety of the acts and the quality of their realization.

    Accelerate response to requests

The proposed course intends to respond to a disparity that arises on French soil: depending on the region, the city, or the personal situation of the young woman, access to voluntary termination of pregnancy is not the same. According to the announcement made on the website of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, this decision is necessary:

“Depending on the dynamics specific to each territory, the experimentation will speed up the response to women’s requests and diversify the profiles of the professionals they can approach, adjusting the paths more finely to the aspirations of each.”

According to the law of March 2, 2022, aimed at strengthening access to abortion, this experimental period is a first step before generalization during 2023 in “all health establishments wishing to engage in this approach”.
