Instagram launches automatic captioning in its videos

You can now watch videos posted on Instagram without mute while following what is said. The social network has just announced the imminent deployment of its automatic captioning function on videos. And it was Adam Mosseri himself, the boss of Instagram, who announced the good news on Twitter.

While the captioning feature for videos on Instagram has already been around for a few months, it was previously only limited to stories, and required manual activation by the author of the posted content.

Now, no further action is required and all video content published on the platform will benefit from this feature. To satisfy as many people as possible, the subtitling of videos offered by Instagram is available in no less than 17 languages, including French. To display them, just access the options of the video being played where a Manage subtitles menu has been integrated.

Instagram is not the first platform to offer automatic captioning of its content. Introduced by YouTube in 2010, automatic captions in videos later appeared on Facebook.

Last year, TikTok followed suit by also introducing automatic subtitles in its videos to provide better accessibility to its application for people with hearing impairments. More recently, Twitter did the same for all of its videos when played without sound.
