Against the Storm is already doing well on Steam. MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus is regularly fascinated by the roguelite building game. The release is now in early access after a yearat. Included: a brand new mode.

What kind of game is this?

  • Against the Storm is a building game in which you have to rebuild a settlement again and again because a storm destroys it.
  • When building, you have to make sure to provide for your residents and at the same time not clear up too much of the surrounding forest, because it will take revenge – and the queen will also become impatient.
  • For every settlement you complete, you get a reward that you can use to buy improvements. This makes the rounds easier, or you can tackle higher difficulties.

    • This is what makes Against the Storm so special: Unlike classic building games like Anno or Tropico, you don’t build a city endlessly and optimize your production routes or develop your houses over many eras.

    Instead, you are always faced with the problem of having to face adverse conditions. At the same time, you should somehow keep the queen happy, on whose behalf you travel and manage the settlements. Features include:

  • 5 different races that can inhabit your settlements – each with their own needs and advantages
  • dozens of buildings with production chains that you have to manage
  • long-term progress as you gain more and more advantages and can last longer
  • increasing difficulty for more challenge
  • Meta progression with settlement upgrades
  • Always random maps and requirements, so that no two settlements are the same

    • Your settlements will be destroyed with each new passage of the all-controlling storm. With “Seals” you extend the time between storms. In the end, you are playing to these seals.

    Release on December 8th – On Steam and in PC Game Pass

    On Steam, Against the Storm has a rating of 95% and is therefore “extremely positive.” A big plus point that players see: because every round is different, you can’t just use the same strategy every time, like with other city builders the case is. In addition, you are working under a certain amount of time pressure and so there is actually an “end” – you don’t accidentally play all night long.

    Personally, I can’t fully confirm this – it has often happened to me that I only dragged myself to bed at 4 a.m. completely destroyed. Trying to finish “one settlement” in order to get closer to the next seal is too tempting.

    Against the Storm was released in early access in November 2022 and received an update every 2 weeks during this time. Bugs were always fixed there, and new features and improvements were often even introduced. The game currently costs €29.99:

    Now the 1.0 release is pending. In a press release, the developers revealed that Against the Storm will officially be released on December 8th. The new mode “Queen’s Hand” is included, in which you only have one round to complete the most difficult seal.

    The game will also be released on PC Game Pass on the same day. Against the Storm is completely localized in German.
