Inside the Earth a piece the size of two continents

According to research, another planet collided with the early Earth 4.5 billion years ago. The moon was also born as a result of the collision.

An international team of researchers has mapped areas inside the Earth that are believed to be remnants of another planet, Theia.

The researchers found out why and where the vibrations of the Earth’s crust, the seismic waves, travel at slightly different speeds in different parts of the Earth.

The research results seem to support the theory that another planet collided with the early Earth 4.5 billion years ago. The moon was also born as a result of the collision.

Parts of the planet that collided with Earth, named Theia, still appear to be in the Earth’s interior. The remnants of Theia are 2 to 3.5 percent denser matter than other parts of the Earth’s crust, which explains the slowing down of seismic waves.

According to researchers, the remains of Theia can be found at a depth of about 2,900 kilometers inside the Earth. The size of the remains corresponds to about two continents.

The study has been published In the journal Nature and that also tells Swedish public radio SVT.
