Inmates at Hällbyanstalten kicked a fellow prisoner unconscious

The incident occurred on January 27 this year.

A prisoner at Hällbyanstalten was badly beaten by several other inmates. In questioning, a correctional officer, who witnessed the incident, describes how “lots of guys” kicked and hit “recklessly”.

Six people are now charged with aggravated assault. The prosecutor believes that the men showed “special recklessness or brutality” and that the attack happened suddenly. Furthermore, the man was unable to defend himself and the assault continued after he fell to the floor.

“The perpetrators have shown particular recklessness or brutality when they jointly exercised violence against a single person,” the preliminary investigation report states.

Became unconscious

The designated man is said to have been seen rushing out of a cell with several other inmates following him, according to guard personnel. The prisoners kicked and punched – until the man became unconscious. He suffered lacerations to his face, bruises and fractures to his nasal bone.

“The target then falls into the living room where he receives a large number of blows from a total of nine designated perpetrators. The final blow dealt is a knee from one of the perpetrators. The knee hits the plaintiff in the face and causes the plaintiff to pass out,” one of the guards told the police.

Caught on surveillance camera

When there were enough staff, they could step in and stop the abuse. The exposed man had to go to hospital and has not wanted to participate in the investigation.

During questioning, a correctional officer says that the man’s head was bleeding profusely and that blood was “pumping out” from his skull and that he had “rattling” breathing.

Large parts of the incident were caught on the institution’s surveillance cameras, where the people can be seen abusing the vulnerable man. In questioning, the suspected perpetrators repeat “no comments” when asked about the brutal assault.
