Ingemar Stenmark’s beautiful tribute straight from the heart to Armand Duplantis that touches all Swedes

Armand Duplantis is Swedish sports’ biggest star right now.
Whereas Ingemar Stenmark was just that in the 70s and 80s.
“Stenis” knows exactly what it takes to succeed and gives a powerful tribute to “Mondo”.

There are few athletes who can measure up Ingemar Stenmarks success and immense popularity in Sweden. Possibly it could be Armand Duplantis which will reach the same greatness with the Swedes in the near future.

Duplanti’s success

He is really on the right track if you look at the 23-year-old’s solid track record at such a young age. Olympic gold, double WC gold, triple European Championship gold and six world records in just a few years, as well as a whole bunch of individual awards piled high.

The big breakthrough came in 2018 when “Mondo” took the step from junior to senior and won EC gold as an 18-year-old. During the European Championship finals in Berlin, Swedes were on pins and needles to follow the young Swedish-American Duplantis and he did not disappoint by breaking both a new personal record and a new Swedish record with 6.05.

Stenmark pays homage

One who sat and watched the whole drama with great nervousness was precisely Ingemar Stenmark. He himself was just 18 years old when he won his very first World Cup race in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy, and he will never forget Mondo’s breakthrough.
– Among the biggest I’ve seen. And especially since it is a difficult branch, you can compare it a bit with skiing. Both branches are small margins and everything has to be right. For him, everything was right, absolutely enormous, says “Stenis” in an old interview with SVT.

The usually calm and quiet Stenmark reveals that he got very excited and screamed at home on the TV couch. At the same time as he makes public his own unknown background in pole vaulting.
– I followed it (the final) a lot, and it was fantastically exciting. Nice that Duplantis managed 6.05. I was a pole vaulter myself as a child, so I know how difficult the sport is. And I really admire him a lot, says the alpine legend to the TV channel.
