France announced, Friday, January 31 on Friday, January 31, acquiring a public institute for monitoring artificial intelligence (AI) responsible for “anticipation of the possible risks inherent in this new technology”.
Called “National Institute for the Evaluation and Security of Artificial Intelligence (INESIA)”, it is “piloted by the General Secretariat of Defense and National Security on behalf of the Prime Minister and by the Directorate General of Companies of Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, “the government said in a statement published on Monday. He adds that this institute will “federate an ecosystem of national actors”.
Without creating a new legal structure, INESIA brings together the National Agency for Information Systems Security, the National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology, the National Laboratory for Metrology and Tests and the pole of ‘Expertise in digital regulation. It will not be equipped with the powers of a regulator but must “scientifically study all the effects of this technology, including in terms of security,” said the government.
The Government claimed to create this institute “in accordance with the priorities established in May 2024 by the Seoul Declaration for a safe, innovative and inclusive AI”. This has been adopted by the European Union, three of its members including France, and seven other peak countries in new technologies (Australia, Canada, South Korea, United States, Japan, United Kingdom and Singapore ).
