The reason for the decision is that the governor of the Indonesian province of Bali made it clear that Israel’s national team is not welcome to participate, even though the nation was qualified for the U20 World Cup.
The statement comes in the wake of the large demonstrations in the capital Jakarta in support of the Palestinian side in the conflict with Israel.
The Muslim country of Indonesia has no diplomatic relationship with Israel.
Fifa does not want to go into further details and it is currently unclear where the championship will be played. It was also pointed out that Indonesia could be punished with additional sanctions.
“I did my best and I have spoken to Fifa president Gianni Infantino, but we have to respect their decision,” said Erick Thohir, president of the Indonesian Football Association.
The U20 World Cup is played May 20–June 11. Sweden is not qualified for the championship.
