In Warsaw, the prime ministers of Poland and India discussed, among other things, the war in Ukraine.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said Thursday in Poland that no conflict can be resolved on the battlefield. Modi was speaking in Warsaw, where he is visiting before going to Ukraine on Friday.

Modi is the first Indian leader to visit Poland in 45 years. He met the Polish Prime Minister in Warsaw Donald Hardly. The prime ministers talked about the war in Ukraine, among other things.

– India strongly believes that no problem can be solved on the battlefield, Modi said while speaking to the press alongside Tusk.

He said that India is in favor of achieving peace through diplomacy and dialogue.

– History has taught our countries that it is important to respect rules, borders and territorial integrity, Tusk said.

According to the Polish Prime Minister, Modi had said that he was willing to work to end the war in Ukraine peacefully, justly and quickly.

Later on Thursday, Modi will meet the President of Poland Andrzej Dudan.

Modi to Kiev on Friday

Modi will continue from Warsaw on Friday to Kiev, where he will meet the President of Ukraine to Volodymyr Zelensky. Poland and Ukraine are close allies.

Modi’s trip to Ukraine has received a lot of attention in advance, as India traditionally has close relations with Russia, whose war of aggression in Ukraine continues for the third year already. Last month, Modi visited Russia and drew criticism from the West after hugging President Vladimir Putin.

In recent years, India has also increased its cooperation with the West. Regarding Ukraine, India has balanced between Russia and the West, and has not publicly condemned Russia’s attack. India has repeatedly urged the parties to negotiate a solution.

“As a friend and partner, we hope for the speedy return of peace and stability to the region,” Modi said Wednesday in a statement released before his departure.

In a press release, Modi said he plans to share with Zelensky “perspectives on the peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.”
