In the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, a couple has sued their only son and daughter-in-law, who, after six years of marriage, still hasn’t given them any grandchildren.

The Prasad couple, who filed a lawsuit on the grounds that they were “exposed to mental abuse”, demand $650,000 from their son and daughter-in-law if they do not have children within a year.

Sanjeev (61) and Sadhana Prasad (57) say that they spent all their savings on raising their son, plus they had their son train pilots in the US for $65,000 and had an expensive wedding.

The couple’s 35-year-old son, Shrey Sagar, and daughter-in-law Shubhangi Sinha did not comment on the matter.

The couple told reporters that they arranged an arranged marriage for Shrey Sagar and Shubhangi Sinha in 2016 “to give them a grandchild to play with after retirement”.

The family stated that they covered the expenses of the couple’s wedding in a five-star hotel and their honeymoon abroad, and also bought a luxury car for their son for $80,000.

Father Prasad said, “My son has been married for six years, but they are still not planning any children. If we had a grandchild to spend time with, at least our pain would be bearable.”

“Every parent’s dream is to become grandparents. They have been waiting for years to have grandchildren,” said the couple’s lawyer, AK Srivastava.
