India downplays the threat of economic sanctions presented by the United States and believes that the country only needs to better communicate why the port project with Iran benefits all parties.

India and Iran signed an agreement this week to develop the port of Čahbahar in southeastern Iran. According to the agreement, in return for investments, India could use the port for the next ten years.

The US State Department warned earlier this week that all companies doing business with Iran should understand that they may be subject to economic sanctions.

According to India, the project is completely safe.

– It’s about communication. People need to be convinced that this project is actually for everyone’s benefit, India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said at a public event in Calcutta on Tuesday.

India’s importance has grown

The United States has warm relations with India, the importance of which has grown as the confrontation between Washington and Beijing has intensified.

Correspondingly, Iran is a long-term enemy of the United States. During the past year, the relations between the two countries have further weakened as Iran supports the Hamas terrorist movement fighting against Israel.

In recent years, India has repeatedly ignored the foreign policy wishes of the United States and bought, for example, oil from Russia without major objections from Washington.

According to experts, the United States is watching India’s actions through its fingers, as good relations are believed to pay dividends in the long-term struggle against China.

According to the framework agreement signed between Iran and India, the India Ports Global Limited company will invest approximately 370 million dollars in the development of the infrastructure of the port of Čahbahar.

The port is located in the Gulf of Oman about 100 kilometers from the Pakistan border.
