Yellowstone was brought to life by Taylor Sheridan, who is not only active as an actor (Sons of Anarchy), but also as a screenwriter (Sicario) and director (Wind River). In the mother series, the Family patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) to hold on to his ranch while modernity doesn’t stop at the rural US state of Montana. His children – ex-soldier Kayce (Luke Grimes), who is married to a Native American woman, Beth (Kelly Reilly), who is as intelligent as she is ruthless, and Jamie (Wes Bentley), the politically ambitious lawyer – are not always helpful with their personal motives.

With the continued success of the Dutton family on US screens, Taylor Sheridan has recently continued to rebuild his narrative with prequel miniseries a whole universe to create:

  • The 10 piece 1883 came as a family backstory and breathless survival drama set in the Wild West At the beginning of December finally also to Germany (to Paramount+).
  • The miniseries 1923 with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren launched in the USA this week and helped the streaming service set a new record for the season opener (7.4 million viewers on the first evening).
  • with Yellowstone: 6666 Season 4’s Four Sixes Ranch spin-off is in the works.
  • with 1883: The Bass Reeves Story another offshoot of a figure from 1883 is to come.
  • Thrills and intrigue like in Game of Thrones: What makes Yellowstone and 1883 so worth seeing

the Mixture of startling nefariousness, beautiful nature shots and nerve-wracking suspense is an explosive mixture in Yellowstone. Here we experience something very unique, which could best be compared to series like Game of Thrones or Succession. Because here, too, tough intrigues are not slowed down by family relationships, but rather fueled.

For example, the doggedness with which fan favorite Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) hates her weaker-willed brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) and regularly destroys it with words causes goosebumps worthy of a Cersei Lannister. Then again, one of the most endearing characters suddenly commits murder and the house of cards of alliances and sympathies has to be reconsidered. In this way the loads moral border crossing Yellowstone with lasting excitement. Also because we never know who will do what next.

It is all the more exciting that the prequel series 1883, which took place 140 years earlier, is taking a completely different direction in terms of tonality: from the very first moment we are rooting for the Dutton daughter Elsa (Isabel May), who is on the deprived search for unsettled land Warmth and love of freedom that simply carries you away. To be her heart and soul extraordinary adventure through hurricanes, fires, cattle rustling and river crossings doesn’t even require prior knowledge of Yellowstone as the series can stand on its own.

That Western genre is re-explored in this serial universe, because in the presence of Yellowstone the cowboys, murders and intrigues are both a thriller and a family drama as a neo-western. And in the more “classic” Western setting of 1883, the series sheds the stereotypes of the Wild West with gunslingers and native people to focus instead on the struggle of a trek of settlers against the forces of nature and human fallibility.

That’s why, apart from Netflix, Amazon and Disney+, it’s worth getting into the gripping world of Yellowstone and 1883 … and hopefully word will soon get around in Germany too no series fan left them out should.
