After the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) came to a bombastic end with Avengers 4: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, the Mickey Mouse company took a surprisingly different direction. WandaVision heralded a new era of superhero adventure on the smaller screen and was the beginning of a series of Marvel series on Disney+.
What makes WandaVision special is the consistent homage and parody of sitcoms of the last century. Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), also known as Scarlet Witch, and her partner Vision (Paul Bettany) – a male android who actually didn’t survive the battle in Endgame – live their quiet suburban life and go through several TV eras and clichés Fast forward. At first her world consists of the black and white 4:3 format, then suddenly it gets some color, until finally the image detail and color tone adapt to the present. And it’s anything but tranquil for Wanda and Vision, because danger lurks where Wanda least suspects…
At Moviepilot, 1,400 users rated Wandavision with one excellent average rating of 7.4 points. Rotten Tomatoes had 91 percent positive reviews from critics.
Even though the MCU has stumbled a bit recently, WandaVision has been well received. Although there probably won’t be a second season, a spin-off is already planned for the end of the year, which follows Wanda’s mysterious neighbor Agatha (Kathryn Hahn).
