Turkey grabbed the last place in the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship by beating Austria 2-1 in Tuesday’s late game.
All three goals in the match were scored from corner kicks.
Turkey took the lead after just one minute, when the defender Merih Demiral knocked the ball into the net from close range from the chaotic situation that followed the corner kick. Demiral made headlines at the previous EC tournament, where he scored the unlucky opening goal of the games into his own goal.
The 1–0 goal came at exactly 57 seconds and is the fastest goal in the playoff stage throughout the European Championships. Previously, the fastest hit in the entire history of the competition was also made in these games. At the beginning of the group stage, Albania hit Italy’s net in just 23 seconds.
No less than four of the six fastest goals in the European Championship all-time have been scored in this tournament. Belgium Youri Tielemans struck in 74 seconds, Georgia Khvitsha Kvaratskhelia on the other hand, in 91 seconds.
Demiral struck again in the second period, again from a corner kick. by Arda Güler the cross came near the front post, from where Demiral headed the ball into the goal. The 26-year-old Central Defender, who previously scored twice in the national team, doubled the number of goals in his 48-game national team career in 59 minutes of play.

Austria didn’t give up on their horses, but got to the end of the goal with the third hit of the match from a corner kick. In extra time, it got one last chance to equalize, but the Turkish goalkeeper Mert Günok stretched out by Christoph Baumgartner in front of the header for a great save and sealed the next place.
The match was Turkey’s first knockout game of the prestigious tournament in 16 years. It played in the semi-finals in 2008 and was left out of the games in 2012. In the two previous games, the games ended in the first group. Turkey has not been seen at the World Championships since the 2002 bronze medal.
In the quarter-finals, Turkey will face the Netherlands, who beat Romania in the previous match of the day. The semifinals will be played on Friday and Saturday.
