Varicose veins are seen under the skin as blue, enlarged and folded. Although swelling is seen initially as a result of the expansion of the veins, with the increase in varicose findings, large vascular bundles may occur and even vessel cracks may be seen. Although varicose veins usually cause a bad appearance, they can also cause pain. It can cause swelling, redness and pain in the legs. The increase in body temperature in summer causes an increase in varicose complaints. Dr. Lecturer Oğuz Konukoğlu drew attention to the things that should be considered about the heir, which is talked about more with the summer season.
RARELY CAN CAUSE SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS
Varicose veins, especially in the legs, is a health problem that can be seen at a high rate in the society. These varicose veins first cause visual problems and then pain in the leg. Rarely, they can cause serious health problems. It is known that the complaints of patients with varicose veins increase in the summer months. We can prevent the increase in our complaints against seasonal effects by taking some precautions.
WHY DO THE COMPLAINTS OF INCREASES INCREASED IN THE SUMMER?
Exposure to the sun and heat causes our body temperature to rise. Our body has some preventive mechanisms against this situation. For example, veins close to the skin expand to reduce body temperature. The further enlargement of the already enlarged veins in varicose patients increases the feeling of pain and tension in the leg. Overexposure to the sun can increase the formation of spider web-like small veins under the skin. It is possible for patients with varicose veins to spend the summer months more comfortably with simple precautions.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO REDUCE THE COMPLAINTS OF VARICOSE PATIENTS
WASH EVERY DAY WITH COLD WATER
A cold water bath constricts the superficial veins. Although the veins take their old shape after the bath, performing this procedure several times during the day can reduce your complaints.
PROTECT FROM SUNLIGHT
Wearing loose skirts or trousers woven from sile cloth, linen, cotton fabrics and covering the legs in the summer will make you feel comfortable under the sun. Wearing a large-area hat can also reduce body temperature.
EXERCISE
One of the important working mechanisms of the veins is the “muscle pump”. Compressed by the calf and leg muscles, the veins pump blood upward. The most suitable sports for this purpose are jogging, walking and cycling.
WEAR LOTS OF CLOTHING ON JOURNEY
Many patients with varicose veins complain that their legs swell after long journeys. Wearing compression socks and comfortable and loose clothing during long trips will prevent your legs from swelling at the end of the trip.
PAY ATTENTION TO WOUNDS
In severe varicose patients, the wounds formed under the knee may progress into stubborn and annoying wounds called “venous ulcers”. It is also important to take measures to minimize insect/fly bites in the summer months.
USE SUN CREAM
Protective sunscreen or moisturizing creams block the sun’s rays. Thus, it will prevent the increase of thin capillary varicose veins by preserving the collagen structure in your veins.
FOR Plenty of Water
Make it a routine to drink enough water during the day in hot weather. Water, which will be beneficial for your whole body blood circulation, will both prevent your body from being dehydrated and protect you against the risk of clot formation in your leg veins and varicose veins. Drinking plenty of water also prevents skin dryness and the development of thin capillary varicose veins.
EAT HEALTHY
You can especially prefer strawberries, cherries, melons and blueberries, which are rich in vitamin C and potassium in seasonal fruits and vegetables. Thus, by supporting your circulation, it will help prevent cramps, reduce possible reactions, aches and pains.
