Increased prison sentence for 17-year-old after mistaken shooting in Västerås

It was in July 2023 that an 18-year-old man was shot dead in a housing estate in Västerås, in what has been described as a mistaken shooting. According to relatives, the murdered man was well-mannered and mostly stayed at home. A 17-year-old boy from Kalmar, who was 16 at the time of the murder, was identified as the shooter.

The Court of Appeal considers, just like the Västmanland district court, that it was the 17-year-old who committed the murder, and believes, like the district court, that by all accounts it was a so-called misfire. The 17-year-old is now sentenced to six years in prison by the Court of Appeal.

  • The court believes that there are extremely aggravating circumstances and that an adult perpetrator would have received a life sentence for the murder. The 17-year-old has also been convicted of other serious crimes, such as preparation for murder. The Court of Appeal chooses to add up the total crime and increase the penalty.

In the district court, the 17-year-old was sentenced to four years in prison.

Increases penalties for aiding and abetting murder

The Court of Appeal convicts two men of aiding and abetting murder and stiffens their sentences to 12 years in prison each. In the district court, they were sentenced to prison for around two years for protecting a criminal.

A man convicted of instigating the murder has his sentence upheld.
