Increase in tail discharge in Sweden is worrying

The number of cases of colic is increasing.
Anna Norrby-Teglund urges parents to be aware of the infection – which leads to pain and redness at the rectal opening.
– It is very contagious, she tells TV4 Nyheterna.

The number of cases of diseases caused by A streptococcus is currently increasing, according to SVT. Above all, the number of cases of so-called coccyx is increasing.

– It is an infection caused by streptococci, which can also cause strep throat. In this case, the infection is at the rectal opening. You get pain, redness and it can itch, says Anna Norrby-Teglund, professor at Karolinska Institutet to TV4 Nyheterna.

In some cases, tail discharge can move to the nape and cause nape discharge.

The professor: “A lot of contagion in society”

SVT has taken part in statistics from the Stockholm Region which show that the number of people affected by colic until September has more than doubled compared to the whole of last year.

– We have seen an increase and have been doing so since before the summer. We have had many cases of infections caused by streptococci. There is a lot of infection out there in society, says Anna Norrby-Teglund.

The professor says that most cases of coccyx are mild and uncomplicated to treat, but urges people to visit a health center if they experience symptoms.

– Anyone can get this, but coccyx is most common in young children, she says.

The call: “Don’t go around being afraid”

– It is very contagious and especially among children when there are bacteria on fingers and toys.

In some cases, the bacteria can become invasive, which can lead to serious infections.

– You shouldn’t walk around and be afraid, but you can have an awareness that these infections exist. If they enter preschools or schools, the schools should go out with information so that all parents are aware and vigilant, says Anna Norrby-Teglund.
