This week it was announced that hockey legend Börje Salming has suffered from the incurable nerve disease ALS.
Nyhetsmorgon has been in contact with Börje Salming and his family, and Börje greets and thanks for all the care and support he has received. He also says that he is very grateful that ALS is being recognized and that we are promoting research, which strives to understand what causes the disease and find a cure.
But what kind of disease is ALS, really? Caroline Ingre is a senior physician and ALS researcher, as well as Börje Salming’s doctor. She provides all the information we need to know and answers viewers’ questions. Caroline also talks about what it’s like to work with giving these illness notifications to families.
– I must actually say that, even as in Börje’s case, the first thing you encounter is a lot of love in the families. Most of the time, many family members are involved in these meetings with the doctors at the hospitals, so even if it is a very boring illness and a heavy news, you still often leave work with a positive feeling about how nice families and how nice individuals are to each other .
Caroline also talks about how many people are affected by the disease.
– We are quite high in Sweden, we have quite a lot of cases. And you also see around the world an increase, and have done so in recent years. So there are actually more and more people affected.
