Close to 2,000 teams gather in Gothenburg, Alingsås, Mölndal and Kungsbacka to play for one week in this year’s Gothia Cup, a record number for the youth tournament. In order to accommodate all players and visitors, the event has turned to schools in Alingsås, among others, where several of the players will now sleep. They have also expanded the Heden area so that more and more spectators will have room.
– It has been a challenge to manage to find places to sleep for everyone, but we have succeeded and it has been a fun challenge, says Anders Albertsson, Gothia Cup event manager.
Hundreds of teams playing
Every day, hundreds of teams from different countries play against each other, hoping to reach the finals and ultimately win. Today’s match against Mexico was tough according to team captain Stella Olsson, but teammate Alice Forslin still thinks the week will be fun.
– I look forward to developing and seeing how other teams play and hopefully take something from them, she says.
