The challenge of mine clearance
In Ukrainein addition to the danger of fighting and Russian aerial bombardments, nearly a third of the territory is now mined, according to the authorities. In addition to representing a danger for Ukrainians, mines prevent farmers from cultivating their land while Ukraine is one of the world’s breadbaskets. To remedy this, the NGO HALO Trust, present in the country since 2015, employs nearly 1,200 people operating in all regions of the front line or liberated from Russian occupation for demining and prevention missions, subsidized by international partners, including France. To get an idea of the gigantic task undertaken by the HALO Trust deminers, we find them in this report by our correspondent Emmanuelle Chaze in Budy in northern Ukraine.

In February 2024, nearly 300 shells from the First World War were discovered on a construction site near Reims in northeastern France.
