In The War Within you can officially play raids solo, but the most important information is still missing

World of Warcraft: The War Within is scheduled to be released in summer 2024. Blizzard has now shared new information about raids, the instances that are actually intended for up to 30 players. There are big changes here.

How do the solo raids work?

  • With The War Within there is a new difficulty, the “Story Mode.”
  • Similar to the Follower Dungeons in Dragonflight, you can visit the story mode alone or with up to 4 friends.
  • The first raid of The War Within, the Palace of Nerub-ar, is already expected to bring this new difficulty.
  • Here you can find all information about the new expansion The War Within.

What about loot? This is exactly the information that is still missing. So far, the Raid Finder, or “LFR”, is the lowest difficulty for raids with the lowest item level of loot. We don’t yet know how much loot you can get from the story mode and what level it will be.

The story mode is primarily intended to tell the story of WoW. Blizzard says that a lot of important core information is hidden in raids. So if you don’t want to visit the LFR and don’t find enough other players, you won’t get everything.

In the official forum, developer Limestone writes:

Many of the story’s most epic moments were told in dungeons and raids. […] With the Nerub-Ar Palace story difficulty, our goal is to provide a way for players to see the epic climax of the Azj-Kahet story if they would not have otherwise seen it. The difficulty is designed for a private party of 1-5 players and allows players to take on Queen Ansurek without the help of fellow players or followers.

The mode is intended to serve as the final chapter of the story, but can be repeated as many times as desired and will appear along with the final LFR wing of the raid.

    “Just remove the LFR”

The decision to introduce a story mode has been extremely well received by players. In a thread on Reddit, users praise the ability to experience text and cutscenes without actually having to raid.

The fact that you can go in alone is particularly great: you won’t be excluded from a fight if an impatient person runs into the boss room too early. Others would like the opportunity to learn mechanics for themselves so they can master them later.

In the thread, some fans even suggest that this new mode should simply replace the LFR completely.

At the moment, the raid finder is not there to really encourage social interaction and many players use it to simply experience the story. The story mode, as it was presented, is better for this kind of thing.

As Blizzard explains, the Follower Dungeons were the first experiment with instances that you can play alone. This will now be continued with the story mode.
