The first to be named is Angela Rayner, the number two in the British Labour Party, who is labelled as more left-wing than Keir Starmer. At 44, she is therefore appointed Deputy Prime Minister and given the portfolio of Housing and Territorial Rebalancing.
Women in leading ministries
The Treasury is headed by Rachel Reeves. This former economist at the Bank of England is the first woman to hold this post. To take over the notoriously difficult Home Office, another woman: Yvette Cooper, an unsuccessful candidate for the Labour leadership in 2015. After serving a quarter of a century in the British Parliament, David Tammy will take over from David Cameron, the former Conservative Prime Minister, as head of diplomacy.
