What is Netflix’s new German sci-fi series The Signal about?
At the center of The Signal is Sven (Florian David Fitz), who as a family man doesn’t have the most positive view of the world, but loves his hearing-impaired daughter Charlie (Yuna Bennett) more than anything and always supports his wife Paula (Peri Baumeister). Paula is astronaut and has just landed safely back on Earth after a stay on the International Space Station (ISS). But on their way back to Germany something terrible happens: their plane disappears without a trace.

Of course Sven wants to understand what happened. He finds more and more clues that point to Paula experienced something incredible in space could have. Or was that just a hallucination? Sven’s investigations are a thorn in the side of the authorities, especially when an outrageous message emerges. As the world increasingly turns against the missing astronaut, Sven tries to solve the mystery that Paula left him.
The signal: Florian David Fitz wants to encourage the Netflix audience to puzzle
Florian David Fitz (Vincent will meer) is not only the main actor (and in a series for the first time since Doctor’s Diary), but also co-screenwriter of Das Signal. He revealed to Moviepilot in advance the challenges of a puzzle series with a sci-fi twist: “You have to see how it works inside you exciting and touching and surprising and yet understandable remains.“
