The finale of the sci-fi series Star Trek: Picard is full of nostalgic surprises. The episode “The Last Generation” not only says goodbye to the crew around Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), known from Star Trek: The Next Generation, but also has a special Easter egg in store for fans of the original series Starship Enterprise.
Warning, spoilers for the finale of Star Trek: Picard:
One of the biggest surprises of the finale is hidden right at the beginning of the episode. However, those who watch the series in the German dubbed version may have missed the appearance of a real Star Trek legend.
Star Trek surprise in Picard finale: Walter Koenig becomes President Anton Chekov
In the opening minutes of Season 3 Episode 10, the Enterprise crew receives an emergency call from the President of the United Federation of Planets. Warns in the wake of the mass assimilation of Starfleet by the Borg President Anton Chekov that no one should approach the earth. Wait a minute Chekov?

A message from President Chekov
Trekkies should find the voice extremely familiar in the original. It belongs to Walter Koenig, who played the Enterprise navigator in the original Star Trek series and later movies Pavel Chekov played.
However, Koenig is not resuming his old role. Because the character is long dead and would be 156 years old in the presence of Star Trek: Picard. Instead, Walter Koenig plays a Chekov descendant named Anton.

The name of the President is also a touching reference to the late actor Anton Yelchin, who played the character Pavel Chekov in the reboot trilogy (2009-2016). In 2016, Yelchin died in an accident.
Of course, the return of Walter Koenig isn’t the only surprise in Picard’s series finale. Overall worry four guest appearances (two of them only in voice-over form) for lots of Star Trek nostalgia:
After Picard’s finale, what’s next in the Star Trek universe?
After 3 seasons with a total of 30 episodes, Star Trek: Picard has now ended. There will be no fourth season. The end of the series, however, prepares a continuation of the story. It is not yet known whether we will follow the adventures of the Enterprise G in a series or a film.
Trekkies won’t be left stranded after Picard’s end, though. The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds starts on June 15, 2023 at Paramount+. The animated series Star Trek: Prodigy and Star Trek: Lower Decks will also continue with new episodes later this year. However, fans will have to wait until 2024 for the 5th and final season of Star Trek: Discovery.
