The Dane Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (53) won the respect and recognition of many fans of the series as Jaime Lannister in “Game of Thrones”. You can now marvel at his acting skills in “God is a bullet” (2023), an action thriller that is streaming on Amazon Prime. The film is approved for ages 18 and up, and rightly so, says MeinMMO author Schuhmann.
What is God is a bullet about? Coster-Waldau plays dejected suburban cop Bob Hightower, whose wife has left him. He sadly parks his police car in front of his former house and longs to spend more time with his 14-year-old daughter.
A group of Satanists burst into this sad still life, who violated and shot his wife, cruelly killed her new husband and kidnapped his underage daughter. Bob wants to grab the shotgun and go after his daughter, but his boss and everyone who knows him tells him he has no chance. He’s just a desk cop and doesn’t have what it takes.
Only when a former member of the Satanists, a broken woman, comes into his life does Bob set out to find his daughter. The woman is marked by years in the sect and seems to be playing foul play. The religious Bob doesn’t trust her, but he has no other choice if he wants to find his daughter.
God is a bullet is on Amazon Prime:
A corrupt world turns even the noblest man into a coyote
What is special about the film? It’s bitter that the Dane Coster-Waldau probably corresponds most closely to the ideal image of a “blonde hero from the sagas” since Brad Pitt in Troy, but only plays broken characters who get worse and worse the longer the film lasts.
“God is a bullet” also describes a hero’s journey that bitterly marks and hardens the hero. Because the “Satanists” he is chasing are unscrupulous sadists and pure evil.
Satanism seems to be just an excuse to behave as deviantly and as evil as humanly possible. There is desecration, cheating, rape and murder.
The hunt for the daughter becomes a minor matter, it seems. Bob and the former Satanist lose all moral compass on the hunt. The lesson of the film seems to be that in a world so broken, even the noble man can quickly go astray in order to achieve what he wants.
The film takes a lot of time just to show how broken and depraved the world in which it takes place is. He even does two or three extra rounds to show that the seemingly harmless supporting characters are also morally depraved and corrupt.
This could perhaps have been saved because the film is a bit long at 156 minutes. Unfortunately, actors like Jamie Foxx only appear briefly. One would also have wished for more from the excellent Jonathan Tucker.
God is a bullet is a hard action thriller that lacks clever twists
Is the film worth seeing? “God is a bullet” is an uncompromising, hard action thriller that features rough scenes and ends in carnage.
The violence is direct and merciless. The bad guys are sadistic. The good ones are hardly better.
You can watch it, at least the film is intense, but God is a bullet cannot really be recommended. But it lacks clever twists and nuances.
If you like Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister and want to see more of him, you still have to recommend “Headhunters” from 2011. This is the Norwegian film that apparently landed him the Game of Thrones role. Also a thriller, but a much better one. Game of Thrones also had some teething problems: The very first episode of Game of Thrones cost $10 million – it was so bad that hardly anyone was allowed to see it
