For SessionLab, Hortense Volle ventured into the lair of the Barback Ogres. From the Paris region where they grew up, to the Ardèche (south-eastern France) where they set up their label and their studio, a portrait of a family group of alternative French songs.
Les Ogres de Barback is a family group that has been traveling the roads of France and elsewhere for more than 25 years. “family group“because Alice, Mathilde, Fred and Sam Burguière, who will be between 43 and 46 years old in this year 2022, are brothers and sisters.
Together, these four multi-instrumentalist artists sign a mixed French song where accordion, guitar, cello and piano rub shoulders, but also trumpet, slide trombone, tuba, violin, musical saw, spruce from the Vosges and so on. I saw them in concert recently and it was damn impressive: no less than 35 instruments on set, not counting those of their guests and in particular 4 brass instruments from the Beninese brass band Eyo’nlé !
More than 25 years after their beginnings, still in the most total independence and, it must also be said, without much media support, the Ogres de Barback have given nearly 2,000 concerts (from the first in a squat to those, recent , at the Olympia or at the Zénith de Paris); have more than 20 discographic references to the counter and, above all, have signed a package of titles that have become classics.
The Ogres of Barback feel that their “craftsmanship“is about meeting people.
Well today, from their childhood home in Jouy-le-Moutier (Paris region), to that of Payzac (Ardèche) where they set up their studio, we are the ones going to meet them…
