At Netflix, flopped or (almost) forgotten films often get a second life. This is what happened again with the horror thriller Ma, which was released in cinemas in 2019. Probably very few of you have thought about the film again in recent years, if you have seen it at all.
The Blumhouse production is on Netflix just fresh in the streaming flat has been released – and has directly dethroned the previous frontrunner Carry-On.

In the film by director Tate Taylor, a group of teenagers ask the single Sue Ann (Octavia Spencer) from their small town to buy them alcohol. The woman not only fulfills this wish of the teenagers, but also invites them to to celebrate parties in peace in her basement. However, the group quickly realizes that something is wrong with Sue Ann.

Ma only comes creeping up as a slow psychological horror escalated more and more violently until the more excessive finale. Above all, leading actress Octavia Spencer, who is otherwise known from dramas like The Help and Hidden Figures – Unrecognized Heroines, is frightening in the role of the opaque psychopath who at some point can no longer be stopped in her rage.
