In the coming months, a smart tool will be mandatory in your vehicle. This aims to warn you each time you exceed the speed limit.

For many years, cars have come with multiple technologies that improve your comfort and safety. Between automatic gearboxes, integrated GPS, reversing cameras, parking aids, and even Keyless Entry, which notably allows you to access your vehicle without inserting the key, everything is done to make it easier for you. life. When it comes to speed limits, automakers are just as inventive. In 1945, American inventor and mechanical engineer Ralph Teetor created cruise control, before it was first integrated into the Chrysler Imperial in 1958. As a reminder, this tool allows you to avoid inadvertent speeding. However, authorities realized that many motorists could forget the speed limit of the road they were traveling on. In this case, the regulator becomes almost useless since you cannot set it to the right speed.

To remedy this, a new assistant has been developed to allow you to respect speed limits more effectively. Called Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA in English, or AIV in French, intelligent speed adaptation system) and boosted by artificial intelligence, it will become compulsory in all new vehicles in Europe, from July 2024. As revealed on the site government.fr, ISA has already been integrated into all new car models since July 2022. To work, this tool will be based on data collected by a camera or your GPS. It will then be able to compare several data such as the speed of your vehicle with that indicated on the speed limit signs or GPS map data. “It is clear, however, that systems combining a camera system, the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and up-to-date digital maps are considered to be the most efficient and reliable in real-world situations.” indicates the Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2021/1958.

In fact, the operation is simple. Your vehicle will warn you either by a sound or by a light indicator on the dashboard, to warn you that you are speeding. A function already present in many models, which will therefore become mandatory. “The basic principle should be that the driver is always responsible for compliance with applicable traffic rules and that the ISA system is a driver assistance system to alert the driver, whenever possible and appropriate” , can we read in the text of the European Road Safety Charter. If you do not heed the warning, your vehicle may reduce speed itself. This is particularly the case on certain car models which will be equipped with a resistance on the accelerator pedal, in order to help the driver to slow down their vehicle naturally. However, this function will not apply to all cars.
