In the Canary Islands, there was a demonstration against illegally arriving migrants | News in brief

Several hundred residents of the Canary Islands have demonstrated over the weekend against the flow of migrants arriving illegally on the Spanish island group.

This year alone, more than 19,000 migrants have arrived by sea to the group of islands inhabited by about two million people.

The islands located near the west coast of Africa have recently become an increasingly popular destination for migrants seeking a better life in Europe, as the sea area leading to the Canary Islands is significantly less controlled than the Mediterranean area.

– The situation is completely intolerable. The Canary Islands do not have the ability to help all the people who arrive, said a participant in the demonstrations Juan Manuel Garcia tells news agency AFP.

During the weekend, there was also a protest against mass tourism in Spain.
