Each Pokémon calls out its own name or at least makes a different sound. Some of these sound strange, but there is also a Pokémon that says more in the anime than it initially appears.
Which Pokémon is it about? Katagami is also known as UB-04 Sword Slash and is one of the Ultra Beasts from Pokémon. These are mysterious beasts that first appear in Pokémon Sun and Moon.
The Pokémon is a Grass/Steel type and looks like a cross between origami paper and a katana. Accordingly, there may be some attacks that have to do with cutting and swords. When it speaks, it is actually calling its name.
Pokémon don’t normally speak human language. Only a few exceptions like Meowth have learned to speak like humans. But Katagami can also speak human language, at least if you use a trick.
You can find out how Meowth learned to speak here:
A Pokémon speaks a sentence when you use a trick
How does the trick work? Every now and then Katagami seems to make strange noises. But if you listen closely, you could see that Katagami makes some sounds that are similar to human speech.
The trick: The Pokémon’s sound must be played backwards. Then you notice that Katagami repeats the same sentence a lot. You can hear what he says in the following video from YouTuber Poipole Entertainment:
What does the Pokémon say? The Pokémon is just as brutal as its cutting skills. It keeps saying that it has once again cut up a worthless object. He often turns the words around in the sentence, but the meaning remains the same.
Are there any other Pokémon that can talk? The best-known example is probably Meowth. It has learned the human language and can therefore hatch nasty plans with Jessie and James to steal Pikachu.
Plaudagei, on the other hand, is a Pokémon in which every specimen speaks the human language. However, Plaudagei can only parrot sentences that they have already heard once.
There are many Pokémon that communicate with humans using telepathy. These include Mewtwo and Lugia.
