The party that rules Tigray concluded its conference on Saturday aimed at proposing the formation of a civil administration for the province, in accordance with the agreement signed with the Ethiopian government in Pretoria on November 2. But this conference was marked by the boycott of the three main opposition parties, which denounce the stranglehold of the TPLF on the process.
It is article 10 of the Pretoria agreement which provides for this: pending the holding of elections in Tigray, says the text, ” the establishment of an inclusive interim regional administration will be settled through political dialogue “. It is therefore this political dialogue of which Muluwork Kidanemariam, the vice-president of the committee in charge of establishing this administration, announced the conclusion on Saturday to the Addis Standard information site.
According to him, the way of sharing the interim power between the ruling TPLF, the army, opposition parties and Tigrayan academics has been endorsed. This proposal must therefore now be submitted to Addis Ababa for approval.
But here it is: the three main Tigrayan opposition parties refused to participate. And their seats remained empty. In a statement, the Tigray Independence Party, Salsay Weyane and the Greater Tigray National Congress said, refuse to serve as a foil for the TPLF’s ruthless struggle to cling to power at all costs “. They dispute the pro-TPLF composition of the administration’s establishment committee, and even the legal legitimacy of the TPLF to govern Tigray in the current transition period.
Functions have nevertheless been reserved for them in the interim administration, according to Muluwork Kidanemariam. In their absence, these functions could be redistributed to the military and academics.
