The breakthrough is the goal of all artists. But the fame that comes with it is often underestimated. You become quick overwhelmed by being recognized everywhere and constantly giving interviews. That’s what happened to veteran actor and Blue Bloods star Tom Selleck. When he took on the lead role in the series Magnum in the 80s, he had no idea how much it would change his life.
Tom Selleck’s celebrity became a battle for privacy
Tom Selleck revealed in the podcast that he couldn’t stand his sudden fame Where Everybody Knows Your Name with Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson (sometimes). The now 79-year-old had his breakthrough with the series Magnum after playing smaller roles for years. Ted Danson, who conducted the interview on the podcast, referred to Selleck during the climax of Magnum as “one of the biggest stars in the world”. Selleck then admitted that he didn’t want that:
I didn’t like that. Mainly because of the family and the sense of privacy. In interviews I was asked questions that I didn’t want to answer.
Selleck wanted one Draw the line between your work and your private life. However, it wasn’t that easy. He repeatedly negotiated with himself what he wanted to talk about and what he didn’t want to talk about. It didn’t always work, but according to his own statement, he was at least able to grow from it.

Before the first season of Magnum, Tom Selleck had no idea
The first season of Magnum was scheduled to be filmed in 1980. However, it was at this time that the AFTRA-SAG dispute began. The actors’ strike prevented many projects from continuing to film during this time. Selleck was already in Hawaii. He had a small house and integrated himself into the community there:
I lived the Magnum life on the beach and stuff.
Everything changed when Selleck received the People’s Choice Award the next year and went into the Nominated for the Golden Globe and Emmy every year for the next 5 years became. Luckily for him, he lived in Hawaii the entire time. Separated from the mainland, he had a safe buffer zone between himself and the fame he was building. Without this, he says himself, he doesn’t know how he would have coped.
