Soldiers who served under Bashar al-Assad gather in front of these centers to hand in their weapons and begin regularization procedures, in order to avoid legal proceedings.

One of them, met in front of the Mezzeh center, shared his experience. “ I came today to regularize my situation ([…] I was a lieutenant in the old military regime and this regularization will allow me to improve my life situation. I hope this stage goes well. The procedures here are simple and the welcome is very good.. »

Inside the Mezzeh center, civil servants are not idle. They must respond to the demands of Syrians who have come to regularize their situation as former members of the regime and legally reintegrate deserters.

A list of people prosecuted

After interrogations and checks, those whose hands are not stained with blood receive legal protection. Abou Yamen is one of the leaders of the center: “ The military leadership has issued a list of people wanted by security forces for prosecution, and a new list will be published, including the names of those who committed crimes against Syrians. In accordance with this decision, sanctions will be applied. »

Although the new Syrian authorities have not released official figures on the number of people regularized, the Interior Ministry has indicated that these individuals will receive a special identity card valid for three months, guaranteeing their protection against prosecution during this period.
