In Sudan armed movements in Darfur are trying to resist

These armed movements adopted, almost unanimously, from the beginning of the war on April 15, a position of neutrality refusing to take a position for one or the other part of the struggle. But the soldiers and paramilitaries who are waging a merciless war are trying to bring them back to their camps.

The armed movements of Darfur, signatories of the Juba peace agreement in 2020, still refuse this war which they consider “ absurd “. According to them, the current struggle is between yesterday’s partners and the regular army has failed to defend the people of Darfur from the atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces

They also criticize the army for having delayed creating the civil protection force included in the peace agreement and which was to group together 20,000 men.

Consequently, at the initiative of Minni Minnaoui, leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement and current governor of Darfur, a joint force was created at the end of April, in partnership with the Justice and Equality Movement and the Sudan Liberation Movement – the Transition board. The stated purpose of this force is to protect Darfur as well as convoys of humanitarian and medical aid.

Only one armed movement in Darfur refuses, for the moment, the principle of neutrality: it is the Movement for the Liberation of Sudan-North, Mostapha Tambour faction. He participated this week in fighting alongside the regular army in Zelengei, West Darfur against the RSF. This movement defected from Mohamad Nour’s movement in 2018.

Another movement in South Kordofan is engaged against the army. This is the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Sudan-North, the faction led by Abdelaziz el-Helou, a non-signatory to the peace agreement.
