It is currently raining heavily in Riga, the capital of Latvia, and residents are also warned of gale-force winds.
In Riga, the capital of Latvia, the city council has urged the citizens to stay at home today due to extreme weather conditions, reports a Latvian daily Diena.
– According to weather forecasts, extremely heavy rains will start in Riga on Sunday evening and continue on Monday, the city’s press release said yesterday.
The rain in the city has only increased during the early night. At midnight, the amount of rain was 9.5 mm, says the Latvian Meteorological Institute LVGMC.
– There may be up to two months’ worth of rainfall at once, and a strong storm is also expected. Streets may be flooded and both public and private transport may be delayed. The city of Riga urges residents to stay at home and work remotely as much as possible, but if that is not possible, you should be prepared for longer than normal travel times, the announcement warned.
Strong wind gusts have also been predicted for Riga. The wind speed can rise to storm readings, i.e. exceed 20 m/s and be up to 30 m/s. The townspeople are also warned about broken branches and fallen trees and are advised to stay indoors. In particular, city residents are asked to stay away from Riga’s parks, breeding grounds, recreation areas and playgrounds.
Residents of Riga are also reminded that strong wind can cause large waves and strong fluctuations in the water level of waterways.
