In Pakistan’s second-largest city, Lahore, primary schools will be closed for a week due to record high levels of air pollution, officials said on Sunday.
The air quality index, which measures several pollutants, reached more than a thousand at the weekend, when even a reading more than three times lower is considered dangerous. On Saturday, the amount of air pollution that is extremely harmful to health increased to more than 40 times the limit values.
For several days, Lahore has been shrouded in smog caused by exhaust gas emissions, agricultural burning and air cooling. About 14 million people live in the city.
Weather conditions are predicted to continue the same for several more days. The authorities will assess next weekend whether the school closure needs to be extended.
