In order to compensate for the fall in the price of the euro against the dollar, Apple has just announced an increase in its prices on the App Store in Europe from October 5th. Apps will be 20% more expensive.

The tech world is also heavily impacted by inflation, and prices are rising everywhere, whether for streaming services with rising subscription costs or for high-tech products – as a matter of fact. For example, the PS5 increased by 10% and the Meta Quest 2 VR headset by 100 euros. And mobile application stores will not escape either… Indeed, Apple – which has just released its new iPhone 14 at more than 1,000 euros – announced on its website an upcoming increase in the prices of applications and their in-app purchases in several countries, including France. A decision motivated by the evolution of exchange rates – the euro being in fall against the dollar – and which will take effect from October 5th.

App Store prices: prices that adapt to exchange rates

Apple presented developers who offer their software on the App Store with a new fee schedule, valid for both the App Store and the Mac App Store, calculated on the basis of the price excluding taxes. The rise in prices is taking place at world level since, in addition to European countries, Chile, Egypt, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Poland, South Korea, Sweden and Vietnam – where a new local regulations come into force requiring Apple to collect and remit applicable taxes – are also affected. For Europe – excluding Montenegro – the first level at the – psychological – price of €0.99 will disappear and go directly to €1.19, while an application currently offered at €1.19 will go to 2 .49 euros, and so on, until the last level, which will go from 999 € to 1,199 € – an increase of 200 euros! If this price increase concerns applications as well as in-app purchases, developers who offer a subscription offer are however exempt – they will then be able to keep the price originally offered to their customers. Ditto for subscriptions with automatic renewal. In any case, it’s now or never to buy an application to take advantage of the old rates!
