In One for the Road, Frederick Lau makes the biggest mistake of his life (many times in a row)

In One for the Road Frederick Lau makes the biggest

At 25 km/h, Markus Goller delivered one of the best German comedies of recent years. The road movie with Bjarne Mädel and Lars Eidinger in the lead roles beautifully balanced between weightless feel-good humor and tragic undertones. It will be interesting to see what comes next.

One for the Road is the title of Goller’s new film. It’s been showing in German cinemas since today and once again we’re dealing with a tragicomedy. After Goller recently followed two unlikely brothers, this time he is dedicating himself to it Alcohol addiction issue. His protagonist: the construction manager Mark, played by Frederick Lau.

One for the Road tells the story of an alcoholic with humor and tragedy

Everything is going well in construction. And even when things aren’t going well, Mark always finds a way to appease the warring parties and move forward. Mark is respected and praised for his efficiency. But when he reaches for the bottle, he turns into one Peoplewho harms himself and others.

Mark spends every evening in a bar and staggers drunkenly through the streets of Berlin. Before going to bed he has two beers from Späti – and then he has a really stupid idea: Mark wants to repark his car. The police catch him in the act and takes away his driver’s license. It’s not the only thing Mark loses.

He makes the same mistake again and again and lets alcohol get the better of him. His addiction drives him into a dead end in which he soon finds himself without family, friends and work. One for the Road takes Mark’s problem seriously and spins it into a story about the fight against addiction – many defeats, few victories.

One for the Road scores with Nora Tschirner and pays tribute to a great cinema classic

In addition to Frederick Lau, One for the Road features another big name in German cinema: Nora Tschirner. Most recently she was in the Karoline Herfurth double Wonderful and Simply something beautiful to see. She plays that in One for the Road Alcoholic Helenawho is trying to get sober with Mark.

Nora Tschirner and Frederick Lau in One for the Road

FILMSTARTS chief critic Christoph Peterson is enthusiastic about this and says: Goller’s touching film in his review the late German response to Billy Wilder’s The Lost Weekend, which is about an alcoholic writer. The conclusion to One for the Road is:

It’s simply a pleasure to spend time with Frederick Lau – you can easily understand his friends who drink along and don’t intervene for a long time. But that’s exactly why it hurts so much when Mark finally loses his footing – and even keeping his fingers crossed doesn’t help for a long time, because fortunately One For The Road does to overly simple answers dispenses with the alcohol problem of its protagonist.

One for the Road has been running ever since October 26, 2023 in German cinemas.
