in Noumea the Montravel district is organizing itself to hold

Nearly two weeks after the start of the riots in New Caledonia, the popular district of Montravel in Nouméa remains mobilized. The police destroyed the barrier which prevented traffic and camped in front of the entrance to the district, 24 hours a day. Montravel now lives in isolation. So the residents get organized.

In Katy’s backyard, a makeshift dispensary, Anaïs and Corinne, liberal nurses, brought some medicines and called Laetitia, a doctor, for help. “ There are people who find themselves out of treatment, chronic patients, she explains. There are also all the fumes that cause respiratory damage in people. And then the stress, the anxiety which I think will affect everyone, at least a lot of people and these people are in the neighborhoods where it is worst. So yes, every night they hear things going wrong, they don’t sleep well. »

Treat yourself and eat, two essential conditions for continued movement. For meals, Louise is in charge of the kitchen. “ Meat and rice are gifts given to us. There are mothers’ gardens. We’re going to get some kanak cabbage and green onions. Each one a ladle, that way there is enough for everyone. »

In Montravel, Emmanuel Macron’s visit last week did not convince. Only the withdrawal of the reform of the electoral body can restore calm, believe its residents.
