In West Africa, Nigeria, six opposition-led states have filed a petition with the country’s Supreme Court demanding the annulment of the presidential election results.

The news agency Reuters reports on the petition submitted to the court.

A candidate of the ruling APC party in Nigeria Bola Tinubu was declared the winner of the presidential election on Wednesday. Six of Nigeria’s 36 states — Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo and Sokoto — reported this week that election officials did not transmit results through the electronic voting system.

The purpose of the system was to guarantee the transparency of elections and thus prevent electoral fraud.

Complaining about the results is common

The six states that filed the complaint are supporting the PDP leader Atiku Abubakarwho came second according to the official results.

The Labor Party came third Peter Obi has received permission from the court to access the voting data of the election authorities so that he can decide whether to file a possible lawsuit. Obi has three weeks to contest the election result.

So far, the election authorities, Tinubu, who was declared the winner, or the Nigerian Attorney General have not commented on the allegations of electoral fraud.

International election observers have reported numerous problems with voting and counting. According to European Union observers, the elections were poorly planned and there were numerous delays in voting. However, the election observers did not accuse the organizers of electoral fraud.

In Nigeria, it is common for the courts to seek to overturn election results.
