A few days after his speech outlining his proposals to stem violence among minors, Gabriel Attal is in Nice this Monday, April 22. The Prime Minister went to a high school to present his experiment of boarding school during the holidays for students who have dropped out of school and first-time delinquents. During these 15 days of vacation, around twenty young people aged 13 to 16 will be supervised by teachers and specialized educators. The objective is to prevent these young people from drifting and falling into delinquency.

But beyond his speech four days ago, the Prime Minister recalled this Monday morning what he had promised three months ago in his general policy speech, to launch this boarding school system and to make youth violence one of his government’s top priorities. He has therefore been caught up in the news in recent weeks and here he is in Nice where he recalled that violence among young people was happening earlier and earlier and that we should not be afraid of words.

A “surge of authority in France”
The idea is therefore, according to his words, to invest more in prevention to prevent young people from falling into delinquency. The Prime Minister also wants to generalize parents’ use of boarding schools, which he considers to be a good prevention solution. Some 50,000 places are available in France and the government wants families to register their children there.
On the sanctions side, Gabriel Attal wants to generalize community service among young people under the age of 18 who are convicted by the courts. He would call it civic work. And if, in two weeks, the experience of these boarding schools is conclusive, then the system could be generalized throughout France.

And he welcomed, in his words, this boarding school which was set up thanks to a collaboration between the department of Alpes-Maritimes, where the city of Nice is located, and the State. Gabriel Attal and Éric Ciotti appeared together, all smiles, as a way of showing that the government is once again trying to seduce the right, while the threat of the motion of censure still hangs over the government.
