Several people who worked in the four-story hall at the time of the collapse were taken to the hospital, the authorities say.
The collapsed garage is located on Ann Street in southern Manhattan. One person died and at least five were injured.
– The building simply collapsed, collapsed down to the lowest floor, said the deputy director of the agency responsible for buildings in New York Kazimir Vilenchik at the press conference.
A robot dog was sent into the building first, because it was considered too dangerous for people to enter the building.
The outer walls of the building remained standing. Officials fear that the building will collapse even more.
In the videos shot on the spot, you can see how tightly parked cars flow towards the ground floor.
The exact cause of the accident is not known, but according to the authorities it was a “structural collapse”.
