Since the October 20 violence in Ndjamena, the authorities have accused the opposition Transformers party of fomenting an armed insurrection. The president of the party, Success Masra, fled the country, its vice-president left the movement to create his own formation. Grassroots activists live in fear and say they are being hunted.
With our special correspondent in Ndjamena, Sebastien Nemeth
Transformers are suspicious of everything and everyone. To meet them, you have to gain their trust and organize a discreet meeting, out of sight.
Blaise is 25 years old and feels hunted on a daily basis. “ We’re really stressed, we’re in hiding, we sleep with the neighbors, my life is in danger. People are even looking for us on the phone, we receive calls. »
It was just then that Blaise received one of those suspicious calls. He hung up : “ I don’t know him and he tells me that there is someone who sent me a package for him and that I have to give it to him, but I don’t know who it is. Maybe it’s a trap. »
” Before, there was fear… »
Next to him, Emmanuel also received this kind of phone call, but also several disturbing visits in the middle of the night despite the curfew. ” At two o’clock in the morning, he came knocking, I asked him: “Who are you? What do you want ? ”, he tells me to open the door. If we open the door, maybe they’ll come in and then take everyone. It’s a way to scare us into giving up the Transformers party. »
Alfredo is a driver-mechanic. He says to himself wanted by the intelligence servicesnevertheless he refuses to give up his fight.« Often in our neighborhood there are people from the ANS [Agence nationale de sécurité, NDLR]. These people know me because even among us, we don’t know who is who, the walls have ears. These people can betray us at any time. I can’t run, I have to stay, they just have to do what they want. Before, there was fear, but I don’t care now. »
Despite their determination, all confirm it, the Transformers are weakened, but” Inshallah the party will survive. »
