A mobilization is planned throughout France on Sunday January 21 against the immigration law passed in December. In Marseille, students are mobilizing against the reform and in particular against the tougher measures aimed at foreign students.
From our correspondent in Marseille,
Last Sunday, in Marseille, a large-scale demonstration already took place. In front of the Saint-Charles campus, around forty students from Aix-Marseille University met to oppose to the “immigration” law.
Fatima, 23, is in a Master 1 in Research: “ I come from an immigrant family It is very important to mobilize today to show that no, we do not support the Darmanin law. It’s important for me personally, but also as a student and a woman to be visible at the demonstration. They promote far-right ideology, it’s scandalous “, she explains.
The law notably tightens access to studies for foreigners, who represent 11% of students in France. The text provides in particular for a “return” deposit, obligatory to obtain a residence permit.
It would be returned on the condition of leaving the territory after studies or upon signing a work contract, which worries Léa. “ For us, this is a measure that will make foreign students more precarious. With in particular many students who will not be able to come and study in France because of the deposit », Fears Léa.

Leaflets distributed almost daily
Currently, this residence permit is already subject to resource conditions since it requires 615 euros per month to obtain it. The law reaffirms the increase in registration fees for students from outside the European Union: nearly 2,800 euros per year of license compared to 170 euros for French students.
So to mobilize, young people tow almost daily, among other actions, as Antoine explains. “ We will continue to make screenings, it opens up discussions and debates. We had a decryption coffee and the aim is to ask our questions regarding the law, to be better armed “, he said. “ And we are also talking about going door to door to speak directly to people who are in Crous residences and who are in precarious situations and who may be affected. »
Receptive students, but difficult to mobilize
The student doesn’t hide it: it’s not easy to mobilize during the midterm, but according to him, young people are receptive. In any case, they are determined and demand the withdrawal of the law, as Léa explains.
“ There are laws that have already been withdrawn in the past and the goal is to really aim for this objective and not to modify it. We don’t want to fight for acceptable racism; for us, the whole law is problematic. »
A law which raises questions while 4 years ago, the government planned to increase the number of foreign students from 370,000 to 500,000 in 2027. The Constitutional Council will make its decision on January 25.
