People are being rescued by helicopters and boats
The series of storms especially hit the eastern part of Kentucky, where 24,000 households were left without electricity.
The National Guard and state police have been alerted to use helicopters and boats to search for people trapped by floodwaters. According to the governor, people have been stuck on the roofs of their houses, among other things.
Heavy rain and storms are expected to continue across eastern Kentucky on Friday.
The states of Arizona and Virginia are also suffering from floods in the United States.
