This new spy series, a remake of a well-known action film, can be seen very quickly in streaming and should get people talking.

What are we watching this week on streaming? At the start of February, Prime Video is offering you the chance to discover a new spy series in just 8 episodes, each lasting around an hour. It has the particularity of adapting a film which was cult in the early 2000s.

Almost twenty years after its cinema release, Mr & Mrs Smith is available as a television series. Unlike the film which saw the birth of the loves of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, subscribers to the Amazon streaming platform will follow two spies, drawn into a marriage arranged by a mysterious agency for the benefit of their missions. The challenges of their (false) relationship will undermine their professional commitments and even more so when unexpected and very real feelings begin to arise between them.

In the Prime Video series, the main couple is played by Donald Glover (who also co-created the program) and Maya Erskine. The first is known both for having played the hilarious Troy in the sitcom Communitybut was rewarded for his series Atlanta. The second is less known in France, having cut her teeth in the series Pen15 And Man Seeking Woman. We will also find in the casting Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You), Paul Dano (The Batman, The Fabelmans), Alexander Skarsgard (Succession, True Blood), Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and John Turturro (The Big Lebowski, O’Brother).

Released in 2005, Mr & Mrs Smith has become a well-known spy film, but perhaps not for the right reasons. The feature film was the subject of great controversy at the time of its release. Shortly after filming, Brad Pitt broke up with his wife, Jennifer Aniston, before getting together with his co-star in the film. Angelina Jolie has always assured that she only got into a relationship with the actor after his breakup, but that did not stop the rumor machine from spinning. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie ended up separating in 2016, eleven years after they met.

The Amazon series should not, however, take on the scent of scandal. Unlike the film, this new version of Mr & Mrs Smith should evoke more the questions inherent to life as a couple in the world of espionage. With only eight one-hour episodes, the series can be binge-watched in a weekend, or in a week for those who prefer to take their time. Mr & Mrs Smith is released on Prime Video on February 2, 2024.
