Police in Iran have announced plans to use smart technology in public places to identify and punish women who violate the country’s strict dress code. According to the police’s statement on Saturday, for example, cameras will be used in public places and thoroughfares.
The use of a headscarf or hijab is mandatory for women in public places in Iran. Those who are caught breaking the rule will be sent proof and a warning message telling them what will happen if they repeat the crime.
The number of women violating the dress code in Iran has increased since large-scale protests began in the country last year against the 22-year-old Mahsa Aminin in the aftermath of death. Amini died at the hands of the chastity police after being arrested for wearing a “wrong” headscarf.
According to the police director interviewed on national television, the smart devices will be put into use next Saturday. According to him, a warning message is sent to car owners if the dress code is violated while riding in the car. If the fault repeats, the vehicle will be impounded.
Last week, a video spread on social media in which a man threw yogurt at two women because they were not wearing a hijab.
